***************** Tim Brown finished his career as Notre Dame's all-time leader in pass reception yards (2493) while also returning six kicks for touchdowns (three punts, three kickoffs). Despite constant double and triple coverage as a senior, he earned a reputation as the most dangerous player in college football. Brown was a first-round pick of the Los Angeles Raiders (sixth player chosen overall) in the '88 NFL draft. He has been selected to play in the NFL Pro Bowl in 1988, '91, '93, '94, '95, '96, '97, '99 and 2000. Luther Bradley was an All-American defensive back at Notre Dame, a four-year starter and member of two national championship teams. Opposing offenses learned early not to go after Bradley. As a freshman, Bradley delivered a ferocious hit on USC's All-American wide receiver Lynn Swann, setting the stage for Notre Dame's 23-14 victory, en route to the 1973 national championship. A first-round pick in the 1978 NFL draft, Bradley played for the Detroit Lions for five seasons and has made Detroit his home ever since. Bradley and his wife, Sylvia, have four children. Luther is also a graduate of Assumption High School in East St. Louis and uncle of Alex Barron, an offensive tackle for the Rams and their first round draft pick in 2005. Jerome Heavens rushed for 756 yards and 5.9 yards per carry as a freshman in 1975 to establish a Notre Dame freshman rushing record that stood until Darius Walker ran for 786 yards on 185 carries in 2004. Still the fifth-leading career rusher in Notre Dame history, Heavens continues to hold Notre Dame's record for rushing yards in a single game by a freshman (148 yards in 18 carries against Georgia Tech). As a senior, Heavens was elected a captain of the '78 squad along with Joe Montana and Bob Golic. After spending a couple of years pursuing a career in professional football, Heavens landed a sales position with Anheuser-Busch.
Thanks to all who came out and participated in Rebuilding Together St. Louis this year! We had a crisp spring day, and 22 Domer volunteers pitched in to make a difference in our community! Here are a few pictures from the event!
Once again, the Notre Dame Club of St. Louis will be sponsoring a home that we will rehab with Rebuilding Together St. Louis and we’re seeking Domer volunteers to help work on Saturday, April 19, 2008. This will be Rebuilding Together’s (formerly Christmas In April) 15th year working in the St. Louis community. During this time they have assisted over 1,100 individual homeowners remain in their homes and assisted in the revitalization of many neighborhoods. Rebuilding Together is an annual one-day effort to assist low income, elderly and disabled homeowners fix-up, paint and do general repairs to their homes. All of the labor will be done by volunteers (us). Corporate sponsorships cover the cost of materials and supplies. You DON’T have to be a master carpenter, plumber or professional painter to participate. All you need is a strong desire to help the less fortunate in our community. Everyone will put in a hard day’s work, but at the end of the day you’ll have a feeling of accomplishment and the knowledge that you helped someone less fortunate than yourself. Lunch will be provided, every volunteer will receive a T-shirt and a variable work schedule can be arranged. There is no cost to the homeowner for the work done in this one day event. Your reward will come at the end of the day when you see what a difference one day can truly make in someone’s life. Please consider donating all or a portion of your Saturday on April 19 for this very worthwhile organization. We encourage you to bring your spouse, a friend and co-workers to share in this experience. Children 14 and older can also participate with adult guardian permission. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jack Dwyer (jdwyer@haifc.com or direct: 314-746-9430, cell: 314-799-7492) to sign up. Again, we encourage you to bring a crowd. You will all enjoy the experience. We should have our house assignment in late March. The Rebuilding Together goal for this year’s event is 100 homes to be completed in one day. This equates to about 2,800 volunteers who will actually be working that day in various locations around The City and County of St. Louis. It’s quite a sight to see how this all comes together! The specific elements of the Hospital Support Program are:
Our current implementation of the Program includes only the Emergency Care program but we are planning to expand to other elements in the future. Here’s how it works: The club management has a list of club members who have willingly volunteered to provide occasional support in various fields, such as transportation, housing, visitations, medical/professional advice. Those volunteering to be on this list are not committing to any particular situation, but have agreed to be contacted by a club representative when a need arises. The specific needs:
